I'm looking forward to the beta as well and, truth be told, was becoming a little impatient. lol
It's funny how people expect a fully functional game when going into E.A. titles, though I think that likely stems from the way a lot of "free to play" titles are run; launching under an "open beta" designation despite it being an actual launch with additional content following. It created a very unrealistic mentality in gamers.
Not in the case of Shallow Space, but enough E.A. titles have gone pear shaped to give people a weary mentality when setting their expectations, especially after delays or silences. Some of the teams/titles that went belly up probably had good dev <-> community communication too, until something fell apart. That said it's likely better to have faith in the dev, since we know that positive reinforcement is more productive than negative.
