Taking a look at the interface, I think finding out detailed information about your actual selected ship is a little unfriendly at the moment. Yes, there is a bar on the left with an overview, but if I'm in a battle and see a whole bunch of "-xyz" numbers over my ships, I'll want to quickly and immedietely monitor all of my ships for damage so that I can take action and evac / perform emergency maneuvers if needs be.
Consider this problem: How do I know how much shields a particular ship has? What if it's an enemy ship?
While the system you have does work, it's a little minimal if I select a ship, it'll turn the selected ship white in the left sidebar, but the ships icons are small and for me it needs to be a little more obvious than that. Perhaps it's just a case of a UI effect which highlights it, like a pulse, or some form of flash to draw the users attention to it.
To elaborate a little, the difficultly now is that if a user selects a ship but forgets which one he selected, he currently has to look up to the left of the screen and try and find the white icon, which isn't immediately obvious and literally could be at any position on the left hand side of the screen. All this wastes precious time for the user and adds confusion to newbies.
So to mitigate this, my suggestion would be to just add in a minor little unit portrait on the bottom bar, next to the unit's abilities to complement the left sidebar unit overview. This would make sense because the selected unit's abilities are already down there, so it's effectively functioning as a little unit preview anyhow. That would also help players to understand which ship is which, their names and to also help teach them which icon belongs to which ship.
